UnionSecure Earnings GuardTM Plan

The risk of being in an accident is staggeringly high. What is also startling to learn is how many of these accidents occur outside the work place.

Could you afford to pay the mortgage, car payment, groceries, and other bills without a paycheck for weeks, months, or even longer?

The UnionSecure Earnings GuardTM Plan is limited accident only coverage that begins paying you 90 days after being in a disabling accident of any kind, anywhere in the world.

Benefit options

Choose from three levels of protection - $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 in monthly benefits - for up to one year and for up to 70% of a union member's basic monthly pay at the time of the claim.

To help you calculate the benefit for which you are eligible, multiply your basic monthly pay by 70% (or .70). See below for examples.

Benefit Features

  • Guaranteed coverage to you and your spouse ages 18-64. And guaranteed to pay for any covered disabling accident that happens anytime, anywhere.  You have 24-hour coverage.  Disabling accident must occur after the effective date of the policy. You and your spouse must be Actively-at-Work and reside in the U.S. in order to be eligible.
  • A minimum monthly benefit of $50 will be payable after offsets.
  • Benefits are paid directly to you (or anyone you choose) in addition to any other benefits you may receive through social security, your employer's disability insurance plan or other private disability insurance plan.  However, any amount you collect from workers' compensation programs will be deducted from the Earnings GuardTM monthly benefits.  You choose what to spend your monthly benefits on.
  • Continue benefits if your disability reoccurs. If you return back to work for less than six months, and the same injury that caused your disability returns, your benefits will begin paying again immediately. There's no wait.
  • Premiums do not increase and benefits do not decrease with age - you won't pay more for your coverage, or lose any of your benefits, until the policy terminates at age 70.
  • Strike waiver of premium: We'll pay your premium for up to one year if you are involved in a union-sanctioned strike or lockout.  May not be available for all unions or in all states.
  • Benefits begin paying after 60 days of being unable to work. And once benefits start paying, they'll pay monthly for up to 12 months of total disability.
  • 60-day review with a satisfaction guarantee.
  • Rehabilitative employment benefit to help you get back to work but still need monthly disability benefits.

How the benefit works

You choose from three levels of protection - $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 in monthly benefits. If you were involved in a disabling accident, the plan will pay up to 70% of your basic monthly pay** for up to one year. This is money that you will receive in addition to any other benefits you may receive through social security, your employer's disability insurance plan or other private disability insurance plan.  However, any amount you collect from workers' compensation programs will be deducted from the Earnings GuardTM monthly benefits.

In the Earnings GuardTM Plan, you choose and pay only for the level of protection - $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 in monthly benefits - that fits your monthly income.

Here are some examples of how it works:

Example 1.
Let's say you purchase Earnings Guard and choose a monthly benefit of $2,000.

You have an accident, are totally disabled and are unable to work for 90 days or more. At the time of your accident, your salary $2,400 per month, that is, your basic monthly pay. Earnings GuardTM will pay you 70% of your basic monthly pay. This comes out to be $1680, which would then be rounded by UnionSecure to the nearest $100, which is $1,700.

In this case, your Earnings GuardTM monthly benefit - that is, the money you would receive every month - equals $1,700.

Example 2.
You purchase Earnings GuardTM and choose a monthly benefit of $2,000.

Let's say you make more money a month than in Example 1. For instance, your basic monthly pay is $3,000 at the time of the claim. UnionSecure figures 70% of your basic monthly pay is $2,100.

In this case, your Earnings GuardTM monthly benefit would be $2,000 because you chose a plan that allows for up to $2,000 in coverage.

As you can see from these examples, it's important to consider your monthly income when you choose a plan, so you can get the most out of your benefits for your premium dollar.

**Basic monthly pay means the 12-month average of your regular monthly rate of pay, not counting commissions, bonuses, overtime pay or any other fringe benefit or extra compensation. This 12-month period ends on the last day of active employment prior to becoming disabled.

How much does it cost?

Monthly Premiums

Monthly Benefit Monthly Premium
$1,000 $9.50
$2,000 $17.10
$3,000 $25.20

Rates and/or benefits may be changed on a class basis.

Rehabilitative Employment Benefit

The Rehabilitative Employment benefit is for disabled union members who want to get back to work again, but who still need their monthly disability benefits.

Whether you are being trained for a new job or are learning ways to return to your old one again, the Rehabilitative Employment Benefit will help you through the transition. It pays a monthly benefit amount - that is equal to your disability monthly benefit amount - minus 50% of any income you may receive either for training or while in rehabilitative employment. It's one way to start living your life after an accident, without losing coverage because you've begun to work again. And it's completely optional.

Also, if you remain totally disabled even after a period of rehabilitative employment, you may continue to receive benefits under the Accident Total Disability benefit - assuming that the maximum payment (12 months) has not been reached for that period.

Why should I choose UnionSecure?

  • Serves union members and their families exclusively and is able to provide specially arranged premiums typically reserved only for large groups.
  • Offers a waiver of premium - that means, you don't have to make any payment for up to one year during a union-sanctioned strike, layoff or lockout lasting 30 days or more.
  • Unlike some insurance providers, UnionSecure does not ask you health questions or require you to provide a medical exam in order to receive Earnings GuardTM coverage.
  • Waives premiums (your monthly payments) while you're totally disabled.
  • Provides coverage for seasonal and part-time workers. You just have to work an average of 25 hours per week, or an average of 325 hours per calendar quarter.
  • Provides you a 60-day review period with a satisfaction guarantee if you decide that this coverage is not right for you.
  • Will not increase your premium payment or decrease your benefits until age 70, when the policy terminates.  You're covered for up to 12 months if you begin the claim prior to age 70.
  • Does not use gender distinctions as a way to set rates.
