Life Insurance
Whether it’s an accident or a sudden illness, the unexpected may happen. And experience tells us, it's best to be prepared in these situations. That’s why life insurance will help protect your family’s financial future. And it’s also why many employers sponsor a basic plan for their employees. Some employer-sponsored plans provide a specific amount of coverage - not enough to cover all the bills and other day-to-day costs your family faces when you’re gone. You’ve worked hard to keep your family secure, now’s your opportunity to help protect that security without ever having to reapply for coverage. You’ll have the same coverage until you are 70 years old – when you’ll have the option to choose our Senior Life plan without medical questions or an exam. For example, for only 37 cents a day, a 39-year-old union member could provide his or her family up to $100,000 in death benefits without having to take a medical exam. Amounts over $100,000 require medical exams. No surprise increases. No hassle. And in some instances, you may begin collecting your benefits even before you die (see below). With the power of many, you simply get more with union membership and UnionSecure. Receipt of these benefits may be taxable, please consult with a personal tax advisor. - Choose your level of protection – from benefits paying $25,000 to $250,000, you select the amount of protection you want to purchase.
- Living benefit – Receive up to 75% payout of your life insurance benefit if you suffer a terminal illness.* This allows you to get up to 75% of your benefit money when you need it the most. Receipt of these benefits may be taxable, please consult with a personal tax advisor.
- Pays in addition to any other coverage you may have – because employer-sponsored plans rarely provide the full protection you need.
- Spouse or domestic partner are also eligible to apply.
- Premiums are waived when insured is terminally ill.
- Premiums are waived while on strike – you do not have to pay your premium for up to three months if you are involved in a union-sanctioned strike, lock-out or involuntary layoff lasting 30 days. This benefit is not available in all states or for all unions.
- Pays full benefits for both death by a covered accident or illness anywhere in the world – while at work or away from work. And benefits do not reduce with age.
- Cannot be terminated – for any reason other than non-payment of premium, if you reach age 70, if your union notifies UnionSecure that you are no longer a member, or if the group policy is no longer in effect.
- Coverage without re-application, underwriting, or changes to your benefits until age 70 – when you can choose to move to the Senior Life plan without medical questions or an exam.
*Terminal illness means the covered person has a life expectancy of 12 months or less.
